well we thought we were buying a toy poodle but it turned out to be a mini so im guessing its likely about a 2lb. difference

The difference between ACTUAL Toy and miniature version of CERTAIN breeds is weight/height.

And no one can answer your second question without know what breed you are talking about.

Not every breed has a mini or toy version and the majority of TOY classified breeds have ONE size only – chihuahuas poms, maltese, yorkies ets

    Ev: Toys are smallest

Cameron – Poodles are classed by height not weight. If your do is over 10inches at the shoulder its a Miniature. If its 10 inches or under its toy. Weight has no bearing on whether its a toy or mini

Cynthia – Chihuahua are to be 6lbs and under. There is no toy size. Its either a chihuahua who is 6lbs and under per the standard or one who is oversized.

miniature is smaller than the standard…size depends on breed
toy is smaller still…i believe they have to remain under 15-20 lbs or so to be a toy … think cat size. But again, this depends on the breed…chihuahuas are already small…a toy chihuahua would then have to be one that always looks like a puppy and likely never gets above 5 lbs.

toys are always smaller than miniature

the order goes (from biggest to smallest):
    standard
    miniature
    toy

heres a good picutre showing the differences (in pic the order is toy, miniature, then standard)

There is only one breed that offers these types. The poodle offers Miniature and Toy. The miniature poodle is larger then the toy poodle.

  7. Snuzzle

As has already been said, toys are generally smaller than minis.

Although there is also a class of dog called the toy type, which includes things like chihuahuas, yorkies, papillons, etc. They’re basically small dogs who serve none of the purposes of the other dog types (eg, hounds, working, sporting, etc). Some call them “lap dogs” but not all toys are lap dogs.

miniatures are bigger they weight no more than 11 lbs at full grown. a toy will weight no more than 4 or 5 lbs at full grown. i have a 10 mnth old mini dachshund and right now he weights only 8 lbs.
